Suzanna seeks extraordinary yarns; working with pioneer producers creating small batches of single origin, hand spun, fairly traded and vegetarian ‘living yarns’; the yarns are naturally dyed by expert dyers using foraged and botanical extracts, or dyed organically. Provenance is paramount; informed and driven by her materials, she makes entirely traceable, season-less, storytelling knitwear, handmade with careful consideration of the marriage of ethics and aesthetics. Pieces are made to last with labour intensive, uniquely developed cable knit and felted textures influenced by the geographical homes of iconic knitwear.
Hailing from Carmarthenshire in South Wales, Suzanna grew up affected by the landscape; it drove her connection with material integrity and acts as a provider of visual inspiration; the relationship between a land and what has been made there is fascinating to her. Having studied Fashion Design at Westminster, she then specialised in Knitwear at Winchester School of Art, and is now based at her home studio, a maker of knitwear dedicated to ethics and sustainability. Suzanna’s work has been most recently been recognised by Wales Arts International (Grant Award 2019), Arts Council of Wales (Grant Award 2018), and the Abury Design Experience (Finalist 2018). She has also been awarded The Textiles Society Undergraduate Award, the Winchester School of Art and Peter Jensen Fashion Textiles Award, and placed within the David Band Textiles Award and TEXPRINT’s ‘Top Graduates’ in 2015.’
