Woven textile designer, Jackie Stephens, specialises in shaft loom weaving, but draws on her skills with frame and tapestry weaving, natural dyeing, machine knitting, spinning and sewing to create couture cloth for both interiors and fashion.
Using her signature ‘cypher’ methodology Jackie Stephens creates bespoke code to generate customised weaving patterns for unique woven textiles that can be personalised to commemorate a specific celebration or complement an interior design.
Fascinated by the connection between textiles and text, Jackie uses thread as her pen, infusing her work with story to create handwoven textiles rich in context and narrative. Working with natural materials such as wool, linen, cotton and bamboo as well as recycled materials, handspun and plant dyed fibres, Jackie experiments with new and unusual combinations of materials and processes, to create beautiful artworks and accessories with a unique aesthetic.
For her most complex work she uses her 32 shaft Louet Megado but still prefers a simple table loom for her most experimental work.
Having graduated in 2023 from Carmarthenshire College of Art with a First Class Honours Degree in Textiles, she was selected to exhibit at New Designers in London in the Summer of 2023. She now works from her studio in Cheshire and is one of the very few exceptions we make in representing Makers from outside Wales.

Woven Steganography Customised Pieces
These panels are designed as a personalised item based on customer supplied text and are exclusive to First Of March, adding an enduring value of being shaped to your own personal story.
Colour, size and materials can all be customised.
Woven Steganography is a unique design process in which customers' text is used to create a secret cypher which is then embedded into a handwoven cloth to create pattern. The text is literally ‘hidden in plain sight’.
Text can be names, quotations, dates etc. and supplied in any Latin alphabet language.
The cloth is typically woven as a wall panel as shown but could also be made into scarfs, cushions or tote bags or supplied as a length of cloth.
Jackie is an emerging artist, and by choosing to work with her, you will have the satisfaction of investing in new talent and helping her to grow her business.
