About

Sian Lester

Textiles

A Welsh textile artist, designer and educator, Siân Lester is based in West Wales. Her focus is on ecology and interacts with themes around acts of care, the environment, and sustainable practice. Graduating in 1997 with a BA Textiles at Chelsea College of Art, London and an MA Contemporary Dialogues at University of Wales Trinity St David’s, Swansea in 2022.

Siân exhibits and works to commission for private, corporate, and public spaces and was selected for the Contemporary Art Society of Wales Museum Award 2016 and Natural Connections exhibition at Aberystwyth Arts Centre’s International Ceramics Festival 2023.

Rooted in the heritage craft of botanical dyeing and the philosophy of biophilia, her work is an ongoing journey of discovery: exploring, extracting, and archiving the hidden hues from her surrounding plant landscape; alchemically infusing and sculpting these within the frayed and permeable characteristics of cloth, thread, and clay.

Making time and season-based work, she is interested in site specific responses to our innate, yet entangled interconnection to the natural world: linking locality, belonging, mythology and heritage. In her work there are fragile edges and layers of material construction and deconstruction that nestle and dip in and out of worlds, dye pots and conversations.

Siân’s practice is socially engaged, committed to community and collaborative based thinking, offering spaces and experiences for exchange and encounter. There is an evolving focus on transformation and participation to consequently inspire slower, gentler, more conscious dialogues of interbeing.
