Ruth Petersen combines her skill as a weaver and ceramicist to create intricate, structural pieces with a fragility that reflects the social and political issues which inspire her creativity.
Weaving with wire, Petersen treats each ‘structure’ with ceramic slip before kiln firing the delicate structures she has woven. The heat creates beautiful textures within the ceramic layer as well as disruption of the wire.
Fascinated with the response of different metals within the kiln, she explores the distortions and fragmentation of her original pieces to express the human experience of life and our environment.
While infused with social and political commentary, each piece is a miniature work of art, reflecting the skill of a Master craftsperson constantly pushing material boundaries to tell a unique story in craft.
Graduating in textiles from Carmarthenshire School of Art, Ruth Petersen completed her MA at the University of Wales Trinity St David's Swansea School of Art in 2023 and was selected to showcase her work at New Designers 2023 and the National Eisteddfod of Wales.
