A piece honouring the role of the tree as a conduit for transferring information and messages through ancient markings: its history and story captured in the scars found within the wood. 

I wanted to create a piece that envelopes the viewer in the energy of the repeated pattern of the circles. They illuminate from a central cirle that is actually a hole, look through the hole and you see the life or energy beyond.

Messages from the Neolithic period (roughly 10,000–3,000 B.C.) are not written in words, but are instead etched in stone, clay, and bone, revealing a profound shift towards settled life, agricultural dependence, and complex symbolic, spiritual, and social beliefs. These, often called “messages from the past,” were created through artistic, ritualistic, and functional means, such as cup-and-ring marks, intricate spirals in passage tombs, and small figurines which are reflected in the markings of this sculpture. 

This piece reimagines the life and importance of the majestic tree through its hundreds of revolutions around the sun.

Cup and ring marks are a form of prehistoric rock art, consisting of a central, cup-shaped hollow pecked into a stone surface, often surrounded by one or more concentric rings.

These carvings are among the most widespread and mysterious prehistoric symbols, appearing across Atlantic Europe (Scotland, Ireland, Northern England, Portugal, Spain) and in many other locations worldwide and are evoked by the marks made within the wood
