About

Michelle Griffiths

Fashion, Textiles

Michelle Griffiths - specialising in the ancient Japanese art of Shibori and World Shibori Network representative for UK and Ireland.

Shibori is the ancient Japanese art of tie dying - where different compression techniques in conjunction with a variety of dyes are used to create amazing patterns through resist dyeing.

Based in South Wales, Michelle is known for developing her own personal Shibori vocabulary and on a recent tour of Japan, funded by the Arts Council of Wales, Michelle impressed Japanese Shibori experts with her innovative and stunning techniques.

Her work draws on traditional Shibori techniques but with an innovative focus on the processes involved - stitching, binding, gathering, manipulating and folding to create texture and form within her pieces rather than relying solely on the dyeing process.

Using woad/indigo and other plant dyes, Michelle combines these techniques with new technologies to create accessories and large scale 3D installations and textile wall art.

Michelle is an experienced Shibori tutor - her impressive CV including workshops with the prestigious Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts and school workshops as part of a START programme to coincide with an exhibition presented by Japanese based Reiko Sudo of the Nuno textile organisation.

She currently supports textile students from local universities, including Cardiff Metropolitan University Textiles Department having previously worked with two apprentices  on the Creative Skillset scheme initiated in 2013/14 by the then Prince Charles.

Her solo exhibitions include London Design Festival and Mantra at the Lesley Craze Gallery in 2011 with whom she was represented at Collect 2012 at Somerset House. She has also exhibited at the Saatchi Gallery in London.

A recent collaboration with furniture Maker Christian O’Reilly - the Alice chair - demonstrates the versatility and strength of the artform and its incredible beauty.
